Review PolicyC U R R E N T L Y. T A K I N G. O N. A. L I M I T E D. N U M B E R. O F. R E V I E W. R E Q U E S T S If you are an author (aspiring, established or at any stage in your career) and are interested in making a request a review for your book, feel free to take a wild chance and get in touch using the form below. Due to long term debilitating chronic health conditions, I don't and won't always have the spare energy and well of mental/physical available attention to shower on books (homebound me needs to spend it on herself and cater to her temperamental physiology) so I'm typically known to be selective with my reading choices. My slow-moving temperament and everlasting brain fog, frustratingly enough, isn't conductive to book-after-book consumption at lightning-fast speed. All of that combined with my planet-sized TBR is as overwhelming as it sounds! Somehow I do manage the impossible, and like the superwoman i'll one day believe I am, I'll do my best to keep typing out those reviews and digesting every bit of inked adventure available. I take on author requests infrequently but if your book is a direct match for my personal reading tastes, please boast about those exciting plots and exceptionally vocal people who thrive in your minds and kick up mark-making dust in your stories. Me and my long list of bookish friends and boyfriends might just want to meet them. If your book isn't a match for my preference, take a chance anyway with a personalised message that may make me change my mind. Note: Review dates may be subject to change. I see it as a personal mission to help and guide all writers who get in touch for any of the below services, and as a chronically ill reader/reviewer, It's important to me that writers return the favour in being flexible and understanding. We're a great community, a grand community, a supportive community and I'm committed to building connections with any who dare to stand at the figurative welcome mat that is my virtual landmark. Thank for your time, your energy and your bravery in trusting me with your stories. But I thank you mostly for writing them. ___________________________________

► I accept books from Indie authors, self-published authors, small publishers and big publishers. ► I review finished copies (preferably paperback and hardback but will accept kindle-formatted ebooks). If you would like to request different forms of publication please get in touch. Note: I accept ebook copies, but physical copies are my preferred reading choice as they are a more manageable format (and a complimentary choice for health conditions I have). It would be largely appreciated if authors take this into consideration since too screen time spells mayhem for my headache/migraine conditions. If you still have questions or would like to make any other review-related enquiries please contact me using the form below. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I write reviews of my own volition because I enjoy reading. My reviews will be honest and fair. I believe in aspiring authors as well as established ones so don't hesitate to jump in my email and send over those stories written with your blood and bound by your love.
A great deal of thought, time and heart will always go into my reviews. My reviews will include constructive criticism, critique, what I liked, what I wasn't particularly keen on and my general thoughts on the piece of writing itself. This might include style, themes, prose, comprehension, readability, storytelling, plotline, character development/growth, character analysis, world-building and etc. I will always try my best to finish a book - and usually always do - even if I find myself unable to connect with it. But if I'm met with unfortunate problems, feel that I'm not the right audience for it, didn't like the book or simply just couldn't get into it then I may decide to leave a story or a review ARC unfinished. I may also decide to refrain from reviewing a book I didn't like, even If it was provided under the terms of a reader/writer read-review. This book review blog is a voluntary endeavour, not a job, profession or a contractual agreement of any sort. I read books because I feel passionate about them and they're a source of joy in my life. Sometimes certain books just won't be for everyone, even if we try our hardest to like them. The style and type of my reviews may vary - they might be long, lengthy and thorough or short, sharp and sweet depending on my circumstances and level of disability. Most of the books I have read thus far are copies (paperback/hardback/mostly ebooks) I have personally purchased myself, have been offered freely by authors or have been offered for review. If you decide to enquire about any bookish service, please provide as many details about your book as possible. Any attached media kits would be greatly appreciated. I generally post my reviews to this blog and Goodreads. On ocassion Bookbub and Amazon may be included. I may also choose to not review a book if it wasn't for me. Reasons for low ratings: ➜ I didn't enjoy the book ➜ The story didn't appeal to me ➜ I may not be keen on the genre variety ➜ I found the content/story lacking ➜ I failed to develop a connection It's important to remember that a lower-rated book does not equate to story of 'bad' quality. I just may not have enjoyed it for a variety of reasons. To find out more about the kind of books I read and review, please visit my About Me page. You can also take a look at my Review Directory listing or jump straight to the blog section to sample some reviews! V.L. Book Reviews is a free book review site, but if you do find that you'd like to get in touch for any reason please do consider donating to any of the charities listed in the Charities section on this site. If you aren't able to donate to these charities specifically please do try to find a similar charity specialised in funding for chronic illnesses, invisible sicknesses and/or other mental health-specific organisations. A 1 star rating is one that I don’t prefer to give out nor do I take pleasure from giving as authors are hard workers and writing is a grafting labour, but generally a 1 star read is one that doesn’t sit well with me because it is lacking heavily in everything a good story should (in my humble opinion) be, and this could be down to a variety of reasons (not necessarily because a book is a ‘bad’ book. It just might not have been for me).
A 2 star read is one that might profess potential and i'll concede that it might have viable points of interest, but execution or content is most likely not up to par or to my personal liking. There may be multiple likeable elements amongst many unlikeable elements, but overall a medium read that may or may not have passed the time nicely.
A 3 star read is usually a good, solid read with an approachable book that has a decent framework and enticing storytelling ideas and components. What sets it apart from a 4 or 5 star read its potential for imbalanced devices and disproportionate or lacklustre story puzzle pieces, not limited to dialogue, scene arrangement, technical elements, storytelling details, writing and pacing. It might be full on interesting/creative content but struggled to compel by immersion.
A great, fantastic, memorable story with strong legs and the fiber of a beast. It has many strong, core elements including shining character profiles, immersive writing, thought out plot points and general story maneuverings. A 4 star read is a great success of a story that I will recommend and sit poised to readily devour and talk about to the end of my days!
A truly phenomenal read! A stunning, unfading, timeless pursuit of mesmerising and unforgettable wonder. An irrefutable literary, fantastical sensation. A story that stupefied me to the bowels of wide-eyed, open-mouthed wonder. I’ll most likely have my own copy and treat it like an every-day bible, to which I will boast about religiously. A 5 star read is one that leaves me strictly thunderstruck with faultless characterisation, gilded writing and plot that is the adhesive to my heart, mind and soul. It will stay with me forever like the biggest and eeriest of hauntings, one that I will keep caged within the far-reaching chambers of my heart!
Note: I use these thresholds to mark the boundaries for my basic feelings on the overall piece of work. I often rate based on what and how a story makes me feel. I don't agree with holding categorisations in the highest regard so please don't think a rating will completely define my feelings, is a complete representation of the book's quality, and even more importantly please don't let a star rating unnerve, plague you, or cause you distress! |
