Writer and creator of not only four distinctive fantasy series' to date that feature the lives of paranormals, apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic settings, paranormal romances and the general mayhem of dystopic atmospheres, Jaffrey is also author to numerous Sci-fi fantasy short stories and series chapbooks that cater to her fascination for lifeforms of the paranormal. Jaffrey's short pieces have featured in several anthologies, including titles which have participated in her very own co-edited quarterly fantasy magazine which platforms a growing cohort of exclusive indie stories by Indie creatives. Otherwise known as, Indie Bites. Home to an Oxford setting where a world of humans and vampires is soon to fulminate, we have a chaos-incarnate bisexual detective who leads the indecisive charge as Jaffrey's latest and most injudicious heroine, Jack Valentine. With a storyline that courts vampiric crime, murder mysteries, messy love lives and a world setting on the cusp apocalyptic rupture, this urbanic, murder-mysteries fantasy ushers another instalment that creature features our favourite bloodsucking paranormals. Jaffrey's most recent work in progress belonging to the Silverse is third in her Seekers series, Winta's Day. Having been a recent publish of late last year, the Silverse's readership can expect a much-anticipated continuation; a currently title-less, cover-less book known as book #4 that, as Josie tells us, is in its developmental process as we speak. Which is why, in anticipation of this year's Jaffrey release, I am truly delighted to engage with the writer in an interview that spotlights her Seekers series! Without further explanation, I leave you to enjoy what we can expect from the unfolding series, the author's thoughts on most developments Silverse, her own writing, some fun character questions and some much needed romance talk pertaining to May Day's love triangle. Vaishali (V.L. Book Reviews): Hi Josie, thank you for taking part in this interview! I'm so glad to be in conversation with you while you're buried in the developmental stages (I'm guessing) for book #4 in the Seekers series. Let's start with, how are feeling about where you are in the process right now?
Vaishali: What are some of your preferred tropes and do they materialise within the Seekers series?
Vaishali: Let's talk the love-it-or-hate-it love triangles, because we can't not talk about the Seekers saga without mentioning the twisty, thorny love triangle between Jack, Tabitha and Killian. What made you decide to introduce the series with that particular dynamic, and how did you go about constructively working through the interplay of character interactions between the very different personalities of our central triangle?
Vaishali: Do you struggle with the balance of writing what you wish you write and writing what readers want to read? If so, what's the most beneficial way of approaching this for you?
Vaishali: If you could have one character voice from the Seekers series in your head for the rest of your life, whose voice would it be?
Vaishali: We know how much you thrill in vampirism and vampiric narratives. BUT, If humans were theoretically prohibited from creating, remaking and producing vampiric media in any form, which mythological creature of choice would you write about (and read about) in lieu?
Vaishali: If you were spontaneously dropped into the world of the Seekers; A) who do you think you'd likely bond and make fast friends with? B) who would you avoid at all costs? C) what role do you think you'd likely play as a pivotal/non-pivotal character?
Vaishali: If you could offer some solicited life advice to Jack and Killian (respectively, and far from earshot of the other), what would it be?
Vaishali: In paranormal literature, I think you share a unique interpretation of vampiric authority grounded in modernity. An element of the Seekers series I enjoyed was the challenge of paranormal crime and paranormal enforcers tasked with the difficulty of investigating obscure crimes committed by creatures of an entirely different ilk. It also juggles so many plot and subplot pieces so well. How do you personally feel about the space that the Seekers series takes up in paranormal literature?
Vaishali: Can we get any small suggestive insight on what we're to expect from Winta's character in the growing series?
Vaishali: What I love about the complicatedness of Jack and Killian's relationship is that it's the big, bumbling, bullish, belligerent elephant in the room, in most every situation, one that Jack approaches with a very Jack sense of witlessness. What can we expect from Jack and Killian's relationship moving forward?
Vaishali: Jack isn't the most reliable narrator and we're endeared to her by it because she often introduces an unexpected relatability. She's messy, flawed, human, stubborn and highly prejudiced (in regards to Killian Drake especially). You've already expressed how much you have loved the experience of writing and discovering a fictional someone like her. What's your take on the 'unlikeable heroine'; how do you feel about such an obscure term, and how do you think Jack's presence challenges or influences that as a leading lady who embodies that uncoordinated sense of imperfection and wears it without censure nor hyperbole? What do you think a reader might learn from her?
Vaishali: If Killian Drake had a super secret (though perhaps surprising) hobby that didn't Include his proclivity for promiscuous pursuits, what would it be?
Vaishali: One of your favourite lines from any member of our central cast from this series?
Vaishali: Did you ever think you’d be a creator of multiple book series’, and how do you feel about the many fruits of your labour, having your creative efforts out in the world and available for any bookworm just waiting for their next read?
