Title: Dear Future Self: A Starfish Novella
Author: Lisa Becker Genre/Themes: Rockstar romance, Contemporary romance Year of Publication: Expected release, Feb 4th 2020 Publisher: Self Published The Back of the Book...
Strap yourselves in guys because Award-winning romance author Lisa Becker has kindly offered a short excerpt from 'Dear Future Self' - her upcoming, soon to be released spin off novella told from the perspective of Brad Ostenhauser's band-mate and lead singer of the Kings Quarters band, Jase Connors! If you remember Jase from 'Starfish', you'll also remember him as the womanising heartthrob whose bed was never short of company and whose rockstar charm granted him any lady on his arm, and he loved it that way. Though, perhaps Jase indeed has his own fair share of troubles and a long life on the road can take its toll on just about anybody. Lisa Becker now gives Jase Connors his own love story.....

I lean my head against the window of the car Delilah rented to take us from the airport to my hometown. During the two-hour drive, as we get farther away from the city, the buildings become more and more sparse and the trees more and more plentiful. The motion of the car and the blur of green foliage lulls me into a trance until my phone rings. I look at the caller ID and feel lighter. “Hey,” I say with a grin. “Hey man,” says Brad Osterhauser, my former Kings Quarters bandmate and honestly one of the smartest and most talented guys I know. “Dude! What’s up?” “It’s great to hear your voice, and not just on the radio. Which happens to be every damn time I turn that thing on. Your new single is a bona fide hit. Congrats.” “Thanks, man. Too bad I can’t convince you to start writing with me again. Could use some awards on my shelf.” Brad has a few Grammy nominations under his belt and has also won some Teen Choice and MTV awards for his stellar song writing. Considering the few songs I’ve written for the new album are total shit, I really could use his help. “Yeah, you were always a fan of the hardware,” he chuckles. At this point, I don’t even care about awards. I just need something to keep Damon and the label off my back. The pressure to deliver is strong and I’m in dire need of a break. “So what’s new with you? How’s married life?” Not long ago, Brad married Marin, the public relations professional who toured with our band. “Married life is perfect. Marin is . . . perfect.” His voice is both emphatic and wistful. Normally, I would call him out for being whipped, but I’m honestly too happy for the guy. “You calling to rub it in my face that you and PR Girl are perfect?” I joke. “Nah. But if that’s a byproduct, I’ll take it.” I’m picturing him shrugging good naturedly. “So, what is up?” “I saw that you cancelled some upcoming shows and wanted to make sure your dad was okay.” Damn, that’s thoughtful. “Aww. You follow me on Instagram. How sweet.” I sluff off his concern. “Fuck you,” he scoffs. Now I’m imagining him shaking his head and expelling a puff of air through his nose. I hear a woman’s voice in the background asking him what I said. “Tell Marin I said hi. And I’m just messing with you. Seriously, it’s nice of you to be concerned.” Truly, it is. I don’t think anyone else has expressed anything other than frustration or hostility that I’ve canceled some shows. “Dad’s doing fine. Improving daily. A teacher I was close to in high school passed away and I’m heading back for a week or so for the memorial service.” “Sorry to hear that, man.” “Yeah, he was a really special guy. You know, one of those teachers that really cared and left a lasting impression.” “Both of my parents are teachers, so I get it.” I knew he would. “So, you’re heading home.” “Yeah. Will be good to see my folks. Last time I was there, we basically camped out in the ICU.” “Well, I hope you have a good visit and find some comfort in good memories,” he advises. “That’s quite poetic, man. If the videogame shit doesn’t work out, always happy to collaborate,” I offer. Or, if you happen to have a song or two burning a hole in your back pocket, I’ll take ‘em. “I’ll keep it in mind,” he laughs. Yeah, I know the music scene isn’t really his thing and quite honestly, I have no doubt his new endeavor is going to be a game changer. “Give your wife a kiss for me.” “No way, man. Get your own wife.” He’s laughing on the other end of the phone and that causes me to chuckle too. “Yeah, yeah. I’ll talk to you.” I hang up the phone and smirk. I do miss giving that guy shit. In fact, I miss all of the guys. Even Oliver and his damn practical jokes. How he managed to sneak into my London hotel room during my European tour, I’ll never know. That guy is like a ninja. But it’s nice to know he was thinking of me. Not about what I could do for him . . . but of me. Yeah, Brad and Craig from the band have it all figured out. They’re settled with their someone special. Get my own wife? Brad says. Me, married? Can’t say I’d ever given that any serious thought until recently. The road gets lonely and the constant stream of one-night stands isn’t as exciting as it used to be. Would be nice to come home to someone who just gets you. Not the persona. Or the success. The real you. The one who drinks out of the milk carton, farts in the living room or leaves his dirty laundry on the floor. Just you being you. And loves you both because of it, and in the case of those flaws, despite it. I’m certainly not going to find that kind of woman on the road or holed up in a studio trying to crank out the next hit. |
If you haven't read 'Starfish: A Rockstar Romance' (the original book in this series) by Lisa Becker already you should absolutely give it a read. It was my first footfall toward the rockstar romance variety and quite honestly one of my favourite reads of 2019 altogether! Grab yourself a copy and stash it in your TBR pile because i'm sure you won't regret it...'Starfish' follows the rise and fall of Brad and Marin's budding friendship and eventual romance. While on the road, PA manager Marin unexpectedly find herself touring with the Kings Quarters band, but one band mate in particular strikes up a friendship with her in the hopes for something more.
