Admittedly, I do have a sloth-like reading pace, but since this year kicked off, that pace has only boasted a slower-moving and more leisurely gait. Do you have a slow reading pace? Do you enjoy sweeping through your reads like a bird in soaring flight? Or do you, like myself, have to contend with the far-from-seamless struggle of reading OCD and all the delightful hardships that accompany a life living with chronic conditions? I've been a lazy warrior on the outskirts of a skirmish lately (not literally of course, but the idea is rather appealing to a homebody dreamer like me) and without the mental attention to spare...well, I've been that person trying to pull blood out of a back-breaking stone. In the space of two months I've made my way through five books and I've fashioned up some compact features for each of the books I've read. Take a look and tell me what you thought about these reads yourself. Granted, I'm always in the state of rushing to a finish line, insecure about my level and breadth of story consumption. That's a very normal, anxious state of mind for this fastidious reader but i just want to impart a bit of wisdom. You are not your reading goal. You are also not your reading number. Pace is perfectly and singularly individual, and if you feel lesser or inadequate for not reading enough or as much as everyone else, remember that the quality of your reads will always outmatch the volume. That any progress is progress enough. If you make up a quota so you can meet it, tag a reachable target to ease your mind or, my personal favourite, avoid making a reading goal at all. Riding a wave feels better that chasing a total. It's also a rather nice philosophy to believe in reincarnation because thinking about all those possible lives? It really does bring about some fantasy-lined hope that we'll have all the time in the world to digest all the best stories spread out like an ambrosian, time-eclipsed feast. Tell me about your reads. What have you liked this year? What books have you vetoed and set aside for a rainy day? Which ones are you looking forward to? Perhaps my featured list will give you some ideas... H A P P Y R E A D I N G ! 1) On the Rox by Kat Addams - Rating ★ ★ ★ 2.5/3
A time of finding laughs and light humour after a drought of sadness for them both, he’s sleepless in outer Forks and she’s smitten for the man down under. He’s wine lists, top-tier cuisine and conservative to his core. She’s tats, tacos and a part of a four part, free-frolicking posse who live with spice. Fine dining and fast chum. Upper-end establishment and a dinosaur branded food-truck. A mismatch of classy and casual, with a divine balance of fraternising on more than just local chow and cosmopolitan cuisine. P O T E N T I A L T R I G G E R W A R N I N G: Swearing, adult content such as sex scenes and other adult situations with the mild, underlying theme of domestic abuse. I quite honestly love a small-town romance and ‘One Last Risk’ by Nancy Stopper lays out what is a tragic, true-to-life premise depicted gently and sweetly enough that a reader easily feels the gravity of character history while watching a committed romance nurture life into two people loyal to living bachelor-single. C O N T E N T W A R N I N G: Some swearing, a sex scene and a few heated moments with content not suitable for younger readers. There’s also an intimation of a side character stuck in a controlling relationship. Overall this book deals with lightly represented grief after death. C O N T E N T_ W A R N I N G: A few sex scenes (some taboo, some multiple partner situation). Profanity advises to watch your step for those f bombs. Mentions cancer. I received a copy of Killian’s Dead along with the first book in the Seekers series, May Day, in exchange for an honest review. I’m now done with both and I’m thirsty for Judgment Day! You can find my full Goodreads review of 'Killian's Dead' here! - 4 S T A R S to Killian's Dead 4) May Day (Seekers Book 1) by Josie Jaffrey - Rating ★ ★ ★ ★ 4
A hybrid, intercrossed blend up of a investigative procedural, crime murder mystery, modern urban fantasy and paranormal mystique with vampire mythos that feeds into a complex, duly interesting and almost macabre existence. Jack is nothing if not a hellcat in the face of the time-honoured, prevailing patriarchy. If you like your reads with an interesting slew of characters, compelling groundwork, incriminating intrigue with an operative fit to smite the status quo, this is for you. C O N T E N T W A R N I N G: Abduction, violence, blood, gore, murder, blood drinking, liberal use of f bombs and drinking alcohol. Makes reference to comatose states due to forced drug overdose (including rohypnol), drugging humans, drug use/snorting. Briefly mentions suicide and miscarriage. Sexual assault and rape mentioned retrospectively. Misogynistic attitudes and behaviours.
